Stackt X Travelling Market

STACKT Market, North America’s largest shipping container market, is an industrial shopping destination built on underutilized urban land, where Torontonians go to support local businesses. Celebrating its 5th year, STACKT is going mobile with its double-decker STACKTx units. DS Studio designed three, two-storey shops from standard shipping containers, deliverable by flatbed trucks to Ottawa, Calgary, and Vancouver. Each container features custom lighting, custom millwork, and flexible merchandising furniture. The exterior is completely clad in artwork, acting as a highly visible billboard. A barrier-free deck with ramps offers seating, evening uplighting, and space for a diverse range of programming and activities.

DS Studio is the architect and prime consultant on this project, coordinating all technical aspects with the fabrication team and all design aspects with the client team. With our studio’s experience in retail roll-outs, we created a modular kit of parts to create a flexible retail solution that can be easily customized to each vendor’s needs.

DS studio focuses primarily on the public experience and for this project we specifically wanted to create a hospitable space that invited curiosity, loitering, and amplified the urban realm. To achieve these goals, our team designed a wrap around deck with curated seating throughout which encourages visitors to engage with the pedestrian activity on the street as well as the retail activity inside the shop.
